20th September 2009

Ah ha, gotcha Alice! She was the last member of the family to see our new section and what an awesome day she chose. And it would have been rude not to give her a few little jobs to pass the time.

So Alice retied many of the trees, as the existing ties were slipping down the stakes....

....and then helped to finish off the last 2 sections of the wind-netting.

16th September 2009

Well, we're back to our routine of Wednesday visits to our new section, and this one just happened to be our wedding anniversary too. And what better way to celebrate than to have an extra long list of things to do.

We have refined our house plan and needed to map out the new shape exactly so that it can be drawn on a topological map for council planning consent. Perhaps it should be a metre further forward and perhaps a metre further over and maybe at slightly less of an angle.... And we should just check the view from our future bedroom...

Then we had to sort out the rather sick looking natives. They are still not looking so good despite their rations of Supersheep's pellets and we think the wind must be the problem - so 50 metres of windbreak and some very stubborn clips should sort it out....
And it took all day to attach it to the existing wires, I wonder how long it will take the wind to rip it off.

10th September 2009

Yet another day and yet another visitor - although I fear we might run out of guests soon if word gets out. Anyway, Auntie Diana was the lucky person this week and, although she took a rather relaxed attitude to her visit, this was only after she had gamely lugged many buckets of water up the hill to encourage our native trees.

She also helped us plant 6 flaxes in the space vacated by the gum trees ...

...and had time to check out the proposed house site with her brother.
It was good to see that the sandhill in the background had lost quite a lot of its bulk. Hopefully it will all be gone by the time we move in.

30th August 2009

Another weekend, another visitor, and luckily another visitor who couldnt wait to get stuck in.

So on a very gloomy day, Claudia our German visitor, came to help. We were delighted that she was delighted to have a close encounter with some Supersheep sheep pellets. We hope these might help our rather sick-looking natives.

And, stretching our luck a bit further, she was also a willing raker, even though the rain was rather heavier by then. This enabled us to cut down some very dense kikuyu grass to make way for a few of the gums that we wished to relocate.

Danke schon Claudia

23rd August 2009

Back from our trip to see how things have survived without us.

Not so good unfortunately as those pesky hares have attacked some of the natives. They have chewed the bark of all the kowhais but fortunately not completely ringbarked any of them. We must increase the defences (ie add a milk bottle) and hope that they survive.
And some kind person (or truck) had redesigned our gate. Thank you so much.

Other than that, all is more or less alive and well and the gums are all showing a mass of new growth. Yay
